It Was Really Hard To Protect Myself”: Impact Of The Armed Conflict In Syria On Children With Disabilities

The numbers associated with today’s migration crisis are huge: 4 million Syrians are fleeing their country; 3 million Iraqis fled their homes. But it was the image of an only child – a toddler in a red T-shirt, blue shorts and Velcro shoes, found face down on a beach in Turkey – that shocked and disturbed the world this week.

The photo, which first appeared in the Turkish media, caused outrage, frustration and a little soul-searching. It was widely shared on Twitter with the hashtag, “KiyiyaVuranInsanlik” – Turkish for “Humanity Washed Ashore.”
This Wouldn’t Be The First Time A Child’s Photo Changed History
The boy who drowned was 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi, from Syria, who was part of a group of 23 people trying to reach the Greek island of Kos. They were on two boats on a 13-mile journey across the Aegean, but the boats capsized.
Aylan Kurdi’s 5-year-old brother, Galip, also drowned, along with the boys’ mother, Rehan. Their father, Abdullah, survived. In total, five children on the trip are said to have died.
A distraught Abdullah Kurdi described his family’s plight in an interview with the Syrian opposition Radio Rozana, quoted in the newspaper.
“The Turk [merchant] jumped into the sea, and the wave came and surrounded us. I grabbed my sons and my wife and we held the ship,” said Mr. “We stayed like that for an hour, the first [son] died and I left him to help the other one, then the second one died, I left him and went to help his mother and found her already dead. what should I do….I spent three hours waiting for the coast guard to arrive. The jackets we were wearing were fake….”My wife is my country, I have only God. I don’t even think about getting married or getting married again or having more children… . I’m suffocating, I can’t breathe. They died in my arms.”

, the family, Syrian Kurds, lived in Damascus, where Abdullah Kurdi was a barber, until 2011. After the war in Syria began, they moved to Kobani, a city on the Turkish border that has become a battleground between ISIS and Kurdish fighters. hundreds of planes were attacked.

There has been confusion and conflicting reports about whether the family has applied for legal immigration as refugees in Canada, where Abdullah Kurdi’s sister, Teema, lives and works as a hairdresser.
“There was no record of a request received from Mr. Abdullah Kurdi and his family,” according to a statement issued by the government.

The application was received from his brother, Mohammed Kurdi, and was “returned as it did not meet the requirements of the management of evidence for the recognition of refugee status.”
, Abdullah Kurdi told Radio Rozana that he paid about $6,100 to secure his family’s seats on the 15-foot yacht. They were among the twelve passengers on the ship.
“What really caught my attention were the little shoes,” he says. “I myself am the father of two boys …. I found out that his parents dressed him that morning for a very difficult journey.”
Bouckaert admits that “it’s a very disturbing image, but I think we should be outraged that children are washing up dead in our seas because of the failure of our politicians to provide safe passage … rather than the image itself.”
Women Face Chronic Violence In Syria’s ‘widow Camps’, Report Warns
In Britain, where 216 Syrian refugees have been accepted so far, the response to the photo has made Prime Minister David Cameron defensive. “We will do more,” he said Thursday.
The United Nations estimates that nearly 2,500 people have lost their lives in the dangerous sea journey while trying to escape violence and oppression in their homes. Like all numbers related to the immigration crisis, this one can be difficult to understand. But the message of Aylan Kurdi’s photo is clear enough: The world must do better in addressing the needs of migrants, security and dignity.
“We really need a wake-up call if children are dying, washing up and dying in Europe’s seas, because of our failure to give them a safe passage,” said Bouckaert. People fleeing Syria are legitimate refugees, and should be welcomed in Europe and the rest of the world.” Boys play in an empty shop in the town of Dael, Deraa province, Syria on July 7, 2016. Secret Asio Mission To Save Is Families In Syria
A US-backed Syrian rebel group says it is investigating the beheading of an infant in Aleppo after a video was released showing the boy being killed by a man identified as a member of the group.
The footage of a fighter beheading a small boy with a knife matches one of the worst atrocities carried out by ISIS, which has killed hundreds of hostages in Syria and neighboring Iraq over the past three years.
Before he was killed, the boy was shown in the back of a truck being mocked by several men who said he was from a Palestinian group fighting in Aleppo in support of President Bashar al-Assad.
“This is a prisoner of the Quds Brigade. They don’t have men anymore and they have sent us children today,” said one of the people. “These are your dogs, Bashar, the children of the Quds Force,” said another.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the men were fighters from the Nour al-Din al-Zinki Movement, a rebel group that has received military support from Turkey, including US-made TOW missiles.
US Defense Department spokesman Mark Toner said Washington was seeking more information about what he called an “alarming report.”
“If we can prove that this happened and that this group was involved … it will put us to rest on any support or any involvement with this group,” he told reporters.
In his statement, Nour al-Din al-Zinki criticized what he called “human rights abuses spread on social media,” which he did not control with his policies or actions.
