Hardware Stores And Ironmongers In Market Drayton – CR Birch and Sons hardware store on Roushill has had its last full day, with the owners saying an emotional farewell to a business that has been in the family for 105 years.
Peter Birch, who runs the business with his mother Margaruite and brother Charlie, announced the decision to close the shop at the start of the year, and has had a busy Christmas trade finale.

Mr Birch said: “That’s it – we said we would close at the end of the year and on December 31 that time came.

“It’s a sad day after 105 years and something we are reluctant to do, which is why it took five years to make a decision.
“A lot of our customers have become friends and it’s sad it has to end – but you can’t trade on sentiment.
“It’s been a really busy Christmas and December since we announced we were closing and we’ve been overwhelmed with people coming to see us after hearing the news.”
As well as selling a variety of hardware and business equipment along the Severn in Shrewsbury as well as delivering fuel and lubricating oil to farmers and central heating oil and paraffin to homes across Shrewsbury.

Numbers 6 and 7 on The Bull Ring in Ludlow are now home to hardware and hardware store Rickards & Son Ltd which has been put on the market by property consultancy Carter Jonas with the “sincere hope” they can find to a successful way forward for the business.
